Theme Interpretation: The theme "Life" initially triggered the dad-joke idea of using the spinner from the boardgame "Life" as a recurring sound in whatever I came up with. Then as I pondered the theme, more "clips" came to mind- the newborn cries of my youngest, the "He likes it Hey Mikey" Life cereal ad, Gene Wilder proclaiming "It's Alive", Roy Beaty wanting ""more life"" in Blade Runner, and of course the Circle of Life from the Lion King. I found and trimmed samples of those clips, then just sorta noodled on my keys until something stuck- recorded the persistent "organ" sound first, then drum heartbeats, then added bass then hats then a synthy sound then piano (which really tied things together, rather miracuously), then I placed the sound clips-- with the Life spinner sound before each verbal clip.
I found myself considering the broad arc of life as I recorded the tracks (especially the piano track), and there sorta seems to be a representation of that arc in this "musical picture". (I'm not sure I quite consider is a song per set, but-- i like the idea of it being a "musical picture" of the arc of life.) The entry starts with the cries of our youngest daughter (who is now almost two and cries in a completely different way...) and I can sorta find a musical progression through childhood then adolescence then young adulthood then middle age then elder then-- the rhythm gets out of sync and slows and things cease...
I'm sure there are shelves of books written about how much free will we have vs cosmic destiny vs predestination vs making good choices-- but to keep in simple, the recurring Life game spinner sound just represents that some randomness determines the choices that come across our paths in life, but that we have the power to make the best of every choice, to make the world a better place.
Software used: Tracktion is my main DAW; some "sample" clips were edited in OcenAudio
