Theme Interpretation: "For the challenge, I interpreted the theme "Vintage" to mean old-school electronic music. I wanted the music to have a kind of hip-hop/90's producer vibe, including pitched-down drum samples and drum sequencers. I was inspired directly with Yoshi's Story's "Yo-Yo-Yoshi" music, as this game from my childhold was what came to mind after the theme of the challenge was announced. I wrote the music using cm-incudine, an embedded audio+composition programming language written on top of Common Lisp. All sound sources were generated with incudine's synthesis and sampling capabilities and mixed/processed with Ardour and various dsp plugins.
Using cm-incudine's rego score feature, I was able to sequence the drums and auto-loop the drum sequences using recursive functions. Then, after turning these rego sequences into more functions, I could then sequence the functions into another rego file, creating a kind of meta-composition workflow. Programming allows me to write the music directly, much like in traditional sequencing, but also allow chance to control other parts of the music. I like being able to think and write in broad strokes, and programming music lets me develop my own workflow for that from the ground up.
I went for vintage drum sounds and vintage reverbs to achieve the challenge's music theme. Ultimately, I am happy with how chill it turned out and I hope you enjoy it.
The title of the piece is about myself, as I just found out I have celiac disease. This piece is dedicated to all people who have, or have recently discovered, they have celiac disease. I wish you a healthier, more delicious, gluten-free life."
