Theme Interpretation: Via a collage of poems I had a way too much to say —
'Life is very long and also very brief; we’re marvels and monsters, horrendous things happen to people every day, and humans are only a tiny part of life on earth anyways, which is microscopic dot in the scheme of things — how does one keep any of this straight and go on functioning? is there anything more to it still? Most times all we can grasp is human comfort and companionship, well that’s far from nothing, may it grant us glimpses of empathy — and is that what incarnation means, horrifying and hopeful —'
Previously I've pretty much used public domain poems wholesale — this time was a bit of a mix of piecing together a whole bunch of different things, with some of my own words too in the end.
A few challenges ago I remember people were saying about doing the lyrics before the two hours so I did spend a while on that this time, not writing the whole lyric but assembling things and starting to get them in order.
Ada Cambridge ('The Hand in the Dark'), RL Stevenson ('Grown about with fragrant bushes…'), a few Psalms (8 and 104), Song of Songs; I was going at one point to do a rewrite of 'How Great Thou Art' before realising that’s in copyright apparently so I've just barely alluded to half a line, ditto TS Eliot: 'The Hollow Men' for background reading. I don't convey the message of any single one of these as such but sort of engage with them and have them in dialogue with each other.
